Whether you’ve never felt able to expand your skincare regime, or you’ve never worn lipstick because it felt too bold, this week I want to offer you some options. Firstly, let me say that there’s nothing wrong with knowing what you like and wanting to stick with it. But I do believe that broadening your horizons can make your world that much bigger and brighter, and you can see yourself in a whole new light.

As makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes says: It’s makeup, if you don’t like it, it’ll wash right off. This attitude of ‘what’s the worst that can happen?’ has emboldened me many times. At some point in my life (perhaps at the end of the extended awkward phase that was my teenage years) I decided that certain colours wouldn’t work on me. What does that even mean? When I was growing up there was still an attitude of ‘Find the perfect eyeshadow for your eye colour or YOU’LL LOOK LIKE A MONSTER’ and endless articles on how to dress for your shape. Now, if you find those articles helpful that’s great! But my personal view is that no one has to make choices based on some arbitrary rules that someone else has chosen for them. I think this way of looking at beauty is slowly shifting, and I think that’s great because it reinvigorates and brings a playful attitude that I think is really positive. Now my criteria is just whether or not I like the colour.
If you’d like to take the plunge and put something bright on your face, here are some dreamy, easy to play with lip products that can soften your landing in the world of popping colours and bold beauty.

ILIA Tinted Lip Conditioner. These beautiful balms are super nourishing, made with Jojoba oil and Vitamin E. Available in a range of shades, these are a great introduction product. The shade I’m crushing on is Pink Moon, a beautiful berry.

KOSÅS Weightless Lip Colour. Flattering colours and a hydrating formula. These lipsticks are stunning, from versatile usage (dab some on your cheeks and blend!) to the chic packaging, this cult product is one that I want in every shade. Try Stardust, perhaps the most famous shade!

BURTS BEES offer several affordable options, including the recently released Glossy Lipstick. These are easy to find, and one of my top recommendations to anyone who doesn’t want to spend too much, but still wants a quality, luxury finish.

Remember! Most, if not all products can be made sheerer and subtler by careful application. Instead of applying lipstick directly or with a brush, dab it on with a finger for gradual building of colour. Press it onto lips that have been prepped with balm, so that the colour disperses evenly. Start at the centre, get close to the mirror. You can add another coat of bam for further moisture and a dewy finish.

Face masks are the easiest way to add targeted help to a simple skincare routine. Multi masking is a popular trend, where you wear more than one face mask at a time, but in targeted areas. For example, I’ll use a mud mask on the t-zone for some purification, and a brightening mask on the cheeks. Travel size masks are a great way to try out different products without commitment, but if you’re looking for suggestions here are a few holy-grail masking products that I swear by.

BAREMINERALS Dirty Detox Skin Glowing and Refining Mud Mask. One of my all-time favourites. This mask has the most yummy, thick, smooth texture. If I want a quick fix I reach for it, knowing it will reliably transform my complexion. It refines, smooths, detoxifies, calms, clears and softens!

HERBIVORE BOTANICALS Brighten Instant Glow Mask. This tingly jelly-like mask uses pineapple enzymes to brighten the complexion and give you a healthy glow. The first couple of time I used this, there was some stinging, not exactly painful, but you can certainly feel it doing something! I’d recommend starting slowly, use with care if you’re sensitive like me. I love it for use the day before an occasion.

GARNIER Skin Active Hydra Bomb Tissue Mask. My current favourite pharmacy brand masks! I use the Pink Chamomile Ultra Hydrating Soothing Mask, it’s rich with hyaluronic acid for a boost of moisture. I keep them in the fridge in summer time, it’s great for those days when your skin feels hot and irritated. Sheet masks are also a great option for anyone who would like a quick, simple option as they don’t requite rinsing off. Perfect for people with limited time and energy.

To wrap up, let me leave you with these thoughts. From an outside perspective, the skincare and beauty community can seem daunting, overly complicated, or perhaps self absorbed. There is an element of consumerism that can’t be denied, but there is so much more. Personal expression, a search for self love, a desire to care for oneself, artistic exploration, soothing routine, health and wellbeing, a bit of frivolity during difficult times. If you look with generosity and kindness, you’ll see that what motivates this community is more than skin deep.

Thanks for reading this weeks post! Coming up in this series will be a guide to the most hyped ingredients and buzzwords, simple eyeshadow looks and more!
