Well, we’ve come to the final part of my skincare a to z! Writing this had led me to a lot of thinking about how much I have yet to learn! Guys, I’m no skincare expert. I’m wildly enthusiastic about it, and I love to share, but I’m just as excited about how much I have yet to discover. I hope I can entertain you, and give you some things to think about. I encourage you to take your own journey, and embrace learning- in all aspects of life!
Q is for (CO)Q10 So I cheated a little, Q is a tricky one! CoQ10 is also known as ubiquinone, ubiquinone, coenzyme Q and vitamin Q. It’s an oil-based substance, which is found in our bodies, aiding in a number of functions. When used in skincare it’s supposed to combat free radicals, to avoid premature ageing and sun damage. In the past few years it’s been rapidly gaining popularity, but it has in fact been in skincare since the nineties.
R is for Retinol Retinol, and actives in general, are said to be powerful ingredients. I personally haven’t gotten into retinol yet, but I imagine I’ll be dipping my toes in that pool very soon! As with most things, there are a lot of mixed opinions out there, along with unreliable information. So I encourage you to do your research, chat to your friends who use it. Empowerment through knowledge and all that! R had to be for retinol, and I’d love to know your thoughts about this skincare icon.
S is for SPF If you take away one thing from this post, let it be the importance of sunscreen! I know you hear it everywhere, but the amount of people who still don’t make a habit of wearing an SPF shocks me. It isn’t just about ageing, skin cancer is a very real and deadly risk. I know that out of all skincare products, it’s one of the trickier ones for people with sensitive or blemish prone skin. It might take time, trial and error till you find the right ones but it’s entirely worth it! Sunscreen should be layered over skincare and under makeup, and needs to be reapplied throughout the day as we sweat it off- even if you don’t think you’re sweating it happens, so reapply! If you’re after a powder SPF the Supergoop! Invincible Setting Powder SPF 45 is truly excellent. My holy grail sunscreen is the Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face Superscreen SPF 50+.
T is for Time I should add to this, patience. It took me a while to learn this one, as we all want fast or immediate results. If a product isn’t having giving you some sort of adverse reaction but you’re not sure how much it’s doing, give it a few weeks. Don’t add to many new things in at once. Cell turnover takes time and slows as you age, frustrating but true!
U is for Unguent The Cambridge Dictionary defines Unguent as “a thick substance, usually with a pleasant smell, used to treat skin problems or make the skin soft: She smelled powerfully of bath salts and unguents.” Lovely! Ye olde beauty routine.
V is for Vitamin C With a reputation for powerful results. It’s purported to defend against free radicals, boost your collagen production and battle against pigmentation for a more even complexion. Wow. I love Vitamin C, but not in every product I’ve tried. It is quite strong, so I’d recommend easing into it. Other ingredients can also fight with it, so it’s best to do your research. Drunk Elephant’s C-Firma Day Serum remains my favourite so far…
W is for Water Drink more water. It’s ridiculous what it does for your entire body. Thanks water! P.s, I should drink more water too!
X is for eXtremely lucky I am extremely lucky in many ways. The reason why I’m including this paragraph in my final alphabet post is to draw attention to the fact that luck plays a part when it comes to having the kind of skin that society deems ideal. There is no normal, we’re all different. There’s lots you can do to make the most of what you have, and over the past few years I’ve seen great improvements in my skin. I do think part of that is time, patience and acceptance.
Y is for You You are unique. At all times, your body is trying its very best to support you through life. Sometimes it feels as though we’re being sabotaged, that we’re not enough. But you are, you precious, unique creature. Love your skin and it will love you back. Use products for the skin you have, and the life you have.
Z is for Zinc Oxide Kind of bummed that the alphabet doesn’t finish on a y… I feel like this is a little anticlimactic I have to say! But anyway, z is for zinc. It’s used as an ingredient in skincare as an antioxidant to promote healing. It’s helpful for regulating oil production, and of course it’s used in some sunscreens to block UVA/UVB rays from damaging the skin. It’s not a buzzword in skincare at the moment, but it is an ingredient you’ll find in a lot of things! Thanks Zinc, and I’m sorry for saying that you’re anticlimactic.
There we have it! Thanks so much for reading.
