So you’ve gotten your pumpkins out, and depending what hemisphere you’re living in, you’re either up to your armpits in pollen and cherry blossoms, or crisp autumn leaves. The stores are starting to push plum pudding on us. Yes, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. NaNoWriMo! For me, personally, October is Halloween, December is Christmas, and November is National Novel Writing Month. The minute the clock ticks over from the 31st to the 1st I’ll be trodding that familiar path. Trying to write 50,000 words and I’ll tell you what, I can hardly wait! My first NaNoWriMo was in 2014, and I’ve participated every year since then. I’ve also succeeded in my goal each year except 2016 where I tapped out for health reasons. So I wanted to let you guys know that I’m going again this year, I’m ready to be transported to a world of my own creation. I’d love to know if you’re doing the same! I’ve always been a fairly solitary writer, but this year I’m trying to get further into the communal spirit! Here are a few things I love about NaNo.
NaNoWriMo is for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never written a page of fiction in your life, you can start now. Maybe it won’t be rivalling Moby Dick, but it will be all yours. 50,000 hard won words, an amazing experience to look back upon. The spirit of NaNo is making it work, all genres and levels of experience are welcome here which is a beautiful thing.
It’s free fun! You can join the website, track your journey, find resources, hang out on the forums. Or you can stay in your own cosy space, that’s ok too! Either way, it doesn’t have to cost you a cent.
It’s kept me moving forward when I didn’t know how. You’re holding yourself accountable, with the support of hundreds of thousands of other people. No matter what’s happening in my life, I know that the words are there for me.
To those of you also participating, good luck out there!
